Our Current and Upcoming SAYBN Projects: 

  • Ongoing Eco-bricks project: This project is based in Midrand. Here we raise awareness about plastic pollution and recruit kids (5-14 years old) to participate in picking up litter in their community and have "eco-bricks date" where that litter is used to make eco-bricks​

Our Past Projects:

  • Youth representation at the National Stakeholder engagement on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (2 August 2019, Johannesburg)

  • Information session on the CBD and youth participation in the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, hosted by Wild Oceans in their educational series (12 July 2019, Durban)​

​

  • Facilitating sessions on the CBD and youth participation in the Youth Capacity Development Workshop, hosted by the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (24-27 June 2019, Johannesburg)​

    • From the 24th to the 27th of June 2019, the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries ​(DEFF) hosted a  Youth Capacity Development Workshop on Biodiversity Conservation and Environmental Management. SAYBN was invited to facilitate sessions on the CBD, the role of youth in the CBD, the role of youth in implementing the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the role of youth in the Post2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.

  • Youth representation at the National Stakeholder Consultation Meeting for the 4th National Report on the Implementation of the Cartegena Protocol on Biosafety in South Africa (13 June 2019, Pretoria)

  • Attended the #IAm4Nature Youth Conference (Kenya, Nairobi)

    • 22-24 May 2019, WWF Africa in collaboration with  the African Wildlife Foundation, hosted a​ youth conference to gather the youth perspective on the New Deal for Nature. SAYBN participated in the conference which resulted in the African Youth Declaration for Nature.

 

  • Public seminar on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and the outcomes of the African consultation​​ meeting on the Post-2020 GBF (10 April 2019, Pietermaritzburg)

  • From the 2nd to the 5th of April 2019, the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Union Development Agency/New Partnership for Africa's Development (AUDA-NEPAD) organised a regional consultation meeting on the Post2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. This meeting was in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa. One of our members attended the meeting and in our efforts to communicate developments in the CBD to the South African audience, this member gave a public seminar in the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus​​

  • Representation in the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) preparation process for COP-14

​

  • Attended the People and Parks Conference hosted by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs. In this event we exposed People and Parks youth to the Convention on Biological Diversity, and how they can participate in COP14.

​

  • Presented about SAYBN at the GYBN Africa workshop (Kenya, 2018) and the COP-14 GYBN side event (Egypt, 2018)

  • Youth representation at the National Stakeholder Consultation Meeting for the 6th National Report on the Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity in South Africa (18-19 September, 2018)
