Our 2019 LAC Youth Capacity Building Workshop

Our Current and Upcoming GYBN México Projects:

  • Series of monthly webinars (each month, virtually)

  • Subnational workshop-consultations towards Post 2020 (from October 2019 to June 2020)

  • Communication campaign to engage Mexican youth in biodiversity conservation

  • Youth action day for biodiversity: a national simultaneous ecological activity (August 2019)

Our Past Projects:

At the subnational level:

  • Via Tuxtla Recreativa: Talks were given about the importance of biodiversity and public policy instruments from the international to the local perspective. We also organized bartering and plant adoption, and a photographic exhibition was created.

  • Cleaning in Real del Bosque: The community of the Royal Forest Colony was invited to gather and clean up Real del Bosque, and talks were given about Biodiversity and the main threats it faces in the state.

  • Forest Festival: The community of Real del Bosque was called to the Forest Festival as a closing activity of the National Forest Week. It was attended by CONAFOR and other institutions, ending with the reforestation of the park with native trees.

  • Attendance at the workshop “Methodologies for diagnosis in forest ecosystems: temperate and temporary” (November 26-28, 2018)

  • Incorporation into the National Network for the Dissemination of Forest Culture and trained on forest fires and related teaching materials

  • Participation in seven workshops about the compliance of the Comptroller's Office for the improvement of water systems in Tuxtla Gutiérrez; composed of various civil organizations. (between March 2017 and October 2018) 

  • Assistance to the Training Workshop implemented by Tools for Social Control of Government Action.

  • Participation in the establishment of the water agenda for 2020, a document that was delivered to the elected municipal president Carlos Morales, with the objective of formally positioning an organized view.

  • Forest week: Talks were held for young people about the loss of biodiversity and the actions that youth can take to contribute to its conservation; In addition, we supported a forest rally.

  • Facilitation of a workshop on biodiversity and environmental awareness for girls and boys at CONAFOR facilities. Talks, video projections, and a forest rally were held and a drawing contest convened.

  • Drawing contest at the 1857 Constitution primary school in the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez: We spread and facilitated the annual drawing contest with the girls and boys of the elementary school. To complement the contest, we carried out workshops with teaching material provided by CONAFOR.

  • Reforestation within the polygon of the Sumidero Canyon: We participated together with different civil associations, companies and government agencies in the reforestation of the Sumidero Canyon National Park. (19 August, 2018)

  • PET by plants: Young people were summoned to participate in a cleaning of urban parks in Cancun and then take the plastic collected to the “Plastics x plants” program, where one plant was equivalent to one kilo of pet bottles. They gathered 7 kilos of plastics. The plants were then planted in a park that needed it. 

  • Beach cleaning in collaboration with 4Ocean Conservancy: On the part of the Municipal Government of Benito Juárez, 4Ocean Organization and Warner (aquaman), an event was created to clean the Delfines Beach. We worked to highlight the importance of environmental education and the consequences of not maintaining a healthy and garbage-free place. The GYBN team was present and we worked together with the environment department and with the municipal president.

  • Social Responsibility Forum: This was the most important business forum in southeastern Mexico on issues aligned to the 2030 agenda. There was discussion of an alliance between companies that went beyond the competition between them to create and support environmental events. We were able to make an alliance with the Win-Win and Global Pact magazines.

  • We attended the 3rd Regional Sustainability Forum where we talked about issues such as the Mayan Train, cities and sustainability, pollution reduction, urban mobility.

  • Day of the Dead offering: Together with Eco Maxei A.C, an environmental education-themed day of the dead altar was made to honor the extinct species of the state of Querétaro.

  • Assistance to the 1st Forum of the Mexican Environmental Policy Analysis: The Forum heard opinions and concerns about the environment to incorporate them into the legal framework. Topics addressed were: Environmental Institutionalization, Water and Forests, Biodiversity and Natural Resources, Climate Change, Solid and plastic waste, Urban sustainability, and Environmental legislation.

  • Talks for high school youth on biodiversity and youth activism for biodiversity conservation.

At the national level:

  • Four conversations of peer legislative analysis were conducted on the new General Law on Sustainable Forest Development (MarcH and April 2017)

  • Six conversations of peer legislative analysis were conducted, plus webinars with experts on the General Biodiversity Law Initiative (ILGB); face-to-face and virtual in 14 states (June to August 2017) 

  • Participated in evaluating the ILGB, developing a position and disseminating it in the media and in person to the Senate of the Republic and the state liaison houses of our representatives.

  • Reviewed and contributed to the national position of México for SBSTTA-21, the 10th Meeting of the Working Group 8j, SBSTTA-22, SBI-2, and the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP-14) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

  • Contributed to the development of statutes and strategic planning of the Mexican Alliance for Biodiversity, a consortium of which we are founding members.

  • Co-designed the training process for the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP-14) of the CBD with the Mexican Alliance for Biodiversity, and facilitated the first session.

  • Participated as speakers in the 2nd workshop on territorial governance of the UNDP México project 89477, to share experiences of youth political participation in environmental governance.

  • Organized and facilitated six GYBN México internal training webinars for COP-14, where we analyzed 15 topics of annotated agenda documents and decision proposals.

  • Designed and delivered five youth training workshops on the Convention on Biological Diversity and its implementation through ENBioMex, with the aim of creating state nodes.

  • Aided in the establishment of GYBN México nodes in 5 states, as well as the creation of their local work agendas: Chiapas, Colima, Querétaro, Quintana Roo and Guanajuato.

  • Conducted a session on how to engage local youth in the design and implementation on subnational biodiversity strategies during the 3rd National Encounter of Subnational Biodiversity Strategies. (July 2019)

  • Participated in the Public Consultation to build the National Position for the COP-18 of CITES.

At the international level:

  • Attended as members of the youth delegation to SBSTTA meetings 21 and 22, the 10th meeting of the Working Group on Article 8j, and the 2nd OSA meeting in Montreal, Canada to promote youth rights in the CBD processes.

  • Co-designed and co-facilitated the GYBN Regional Training Workshop for Young People of Latin America and the Caribbean in São Paulo, Brazil, and the Regional Training Workshop for Young People of Africa on the Convention on Biological Diversity in Johannesburg, South Africa. 

  • Attended the workshop on Gender and Biodiversity facilitated by the CBD Secretariat and UN Women, in Montreal, Canada, on behalf of GYBN to contribute to the integration of the gender perspective in the CBD processes. (July 2018)

  • Attended as members of the youth delegation to the 14th Conference of the Parties to the CBD in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt to promote youth rights in the CBD processes. Our roles included coordinating the political advocacy team of the youth delegation, participating as members of the CBD Women caucus, and drafting and delivering positions for the items discussed during the meeting. (November 2018)

  • Co-planned the critical route that the Global Youth Biodiversity Network will follow to effectively influence the process of building the CBD Post 2020 Strategic Plan.

  • Consultation of Experts on “Gender and Biodiversity” organized by UN Women and the CBD Secretariat, towards the construction of the following Post 2020 Strategic Plan, in New York, United States (April 11-12, 2019)

  • Participated in the GRULAC Regional Official Consultation to contribute to the construction of the following Post 2020 Strategic Plan in Montevideo, Uruguay. (May 14-17, 2019)
