Olusegun Michael Ogundele founded the GYBN Nigeria chapter after learning the alarming rate of biodiversity loss around the globe, its effect on future generations and the increasing degeneration of Nigeria's biodiversity and poor attention given to its management and values towards protecting its resident ecosystems. The GYBN Nigeria chapter therefore became paramount to create so that Nigerian youth voices could be added to the campaign for preventing biodiversity loss in Nigeria.

Since then, the GYBN Nigeria chapter has expanded its platform for the young people in Nigeria in the field of biodiversity conservation. The youth and students use the chapter as a platform and a tool to mobilise youth programs and campaigns to defend biodiversity conservation in Nigeria and raise the need for youth participation in biodiversity governance in the country.
